EMDR

Help stuck memories find their resolution

What EMDR is

  • What the letters stand for

EMDR is short for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a well-researched therapy built for memories that never finished processing. Most of what happens to you gets filed away over time and loses its edge; an overwhelming experience can get stuck instead.

  • Why a stuck memory lingers

A stuck memory keeps the images, beliefs and body sensations it arrived with. Something small in the present pulls you straight back into it, and avoiding the reminders shrinks your life without ever touching the memory itself.

  • How we use EMDR here

EMDR works on the memory rather than on the symptoms around it. Research supports it for post-traumatic stress, and our therapists also use it for the stuck memories underneath anxiety, grief and long-held beliefs about yourself. It can help the past settle into the past.

What EMDR can help with

  • Post-traumatic stress and flashbacks
  • Complex trauma from childhood or relationships
  • Memories that still feel like they are happening
  • Grief that still feels raw
  • Shame and limiting beliefs about yourself
  • Sleep broken by the same memory

How we work

What to expect in an EMDR session

Rings of ripples spreading across dark water that mirrors green and gold trees.
  • Preparation comes before any memory

Your therapist spends the first sessions getting to know you, mapping what you want to work on, and building skills you can use when a feeling gets big. You will have a way to put the material down before you ever pick it up.

  • What the processing looks like

You hold one piece of the memory in mind while following a repeated side-to-side cue: your therapist moving their hand, a light bar, gentle tapping or sound. You pause often to say what came up, and you decide how much detail you say out loud.

  • Where these sessions happen

You set the pace throughout, and the work can be done wherever you feel steadiest. Sessions are available in person in West Valley City or online anywhere in Utah.
