Insurance Guide
Questions to ask your insurance
Eight questions that tell you what a session will cost you.
- What mental health benefits does my plan have?
- What is my copay?
- Do I have a deductible?
- Do I have a session limit?
- What is my coinsurance or copay once my deductible has been met?
- Do I need prior authorization before attending a session?
- Will my insurance cover my provider and their practice?
- Do I have out-of-network benefits?
Insurance terms
Four words that come up on every call with an insurance company.
- Copay
- An amount you pay at each visit. Your insurance company and your plan set it.
- Coinsurance
- A share of the cost rather than a set amount. Your insurance pays a percentage, for example 80%, and you pay the rest.
- Deductible
- A dollar amount you pay out of pocket before your insurance starts helping. Deductibles commonly reset in January and July. After you meet yours, you may still have a copay or coinsurance.
- Participating provider
- A provider who is contracted with your insurance company and has agreed to a set rate under that insurer's guidelines.
