Narrative Therapy
You are the author of your own story
What narrative therapy is
-
You are not the problem
Narrative therapy starts from the idea that we make sense of our lives through stories, and that the story we settle on shapes what we believe is possible. You are the person who has been living alongside the problem, not the problem itself.
-
Separating you from it
Instead of I am anxious, the problem becomes the anxiety: something outside you, with its own history and its own tactics. That small shift makes room for different questions. When is it weakest? Who does not believe what it says about you?
-
Rebuilding the rest of the story
From there you build back the parts the problem edited down: the times you held your ground, the values you kept, the people who saw you clearly. None of it is invented. It is evidence that had stopped getting counted.
What narrative therapy can help with
- Shame and a harsh view of yourself
- Trauma that redefined who you are
- Depression that has flattened your sense of self
- Relationship patterns you keep repeating
- Identity, faith and major life changes
- Grief and the stories it leaves behind
How we work
What to expect in session

-
Curiosity rather than diagnosis
Sessions are mostly conversation. You will be asked a lot about the words you use, where they came from, and whether they are actually yours. Expect to be treated as the expert on your own life.
-
Concrete work and slower work
Some of it is concrete: naming the problem, tracing its history, listing the moments that contradict it. Some of it is slower, and it is about who gets to say what your life has meant.
-
Where this work happens
Narrative therapy is usually woven in beside the other approaches in your plan rather than used on its own. Sessions are available in person in West Valley City or online anywhere in Utah.
