Exposure and Response Prevention
Face the fear, leave out the ritual
What ERP is
-
What the two halves mean
Exposure and Response Prevention is a specialized form of CBT for the fear-and-relief cycle. The exposure half means approaching what you are afraid of, on purpose and in a planned order. The response prevention half means leaving out what you normally do to make the fear go away.
-
Why the second half matters
Washing, checking, asking for reassurance, mentally reviewing: each one brings relief for a moment and teaches the fear that it was right to sound the alarm. ERP interrupts that lesson, so the feeling gets a chance to pass on its own.
-
How we use ERP here
Research supports ERP for obsessive-compulsive disorder and for anxiety disorders, and we use it when it fits what you are dealing with. It is not being thrown in at the deep end; you start where you can actually start.
What ERP can help with
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder
- Contamination and harm obsessions
- Checking and reassurance seeking
- Phobias and panic
- Social and performance anxiety
- Health anxiety
How we work
What to expect in an ERP session

-
Building the list together first
You and your therapist start by listing the situations, thoughts and places you avoid, and ranking them by how hard each one feels. Nothing on that list happens before you agree to it.
-
Working up the list together
You work up the list one step at a time, with the rituals left out. Some steps happen in the room and some are agreed as practice for the week, and you track what the fear actually did.
-
Where we work together
Your therapist stays in it with you rather than handing you a list to work through alone. Sessions are available in person in West Valley City or online anywhere in Utah.
