Family-Systems Perspective
See your patterns in their full context
What a family-systems perspective is
-
Your context, not just you
A family-systems perspective looks at what you are dealing with in the context it grew in: your relationships, your family, your culture and the life you have actually lived. A pattern that makes no sense on its own usually makes sense once you can see the system it was learned in.
-
Where a pattern was learned
The question shifts from what is wrong with me to what is this pattern doing, who taught it to me, and what does it still protect. Keeping the peace at your own expense, or needing to be the capable one, came from somewhere.
-
A marriage and family lens
Seeing where a pattern came from is not the same as blaming anyone for it. It is the point where the pattern stops being who you are and starts being something you can choose differently about. It supports individuals as readily as couples.
What this perspective can help with
- Patterns that repeat across relationships
- Conflict, distance and communication
- Boundaries with family or in-laws
- Faith transitions and questions of identity
- Big changes like marriage, parenthood or loss
- Feeling responsible for everyone else
How we work
What to expect in session

-
More than the week behind you
Your therapist will ask who is in your family, how things were handled growing up, what the unspoken rules were, and what your culture and community expect of you.
-
Drawing the map out loud
Sometimes that includes drawing the map out, so you can look at it instead of carrying it. Every background and belief is respected here, including faith that matters to you and faith you are questioning.
-
Who comes, and where
The work can be done with you on your own or with a partner in the room. Sessions are available in person in West Valley City or online anywhere in Utah.
